The term is descriptive as it’s about sculpting sounds from harmonically rich waveforms using filters, envelopes, LFOs and amplitude shaping, and it’s the sound of quite literally thousands of records dating from the sixties right up until now. Why? Because everything that falls under the subtractive umbrella term has gone on to directly influence other types of synthesis such as additive, wavetable, frequency modulation and nearly anything else you can think of. Subtractive synthesis is easily the most important type of synthesis you will come across.
